The very best of winter holidays
Winter skiing holidays are a big thing in our family. All four of us ski – the kids started at 2.5 years old and hubby and I in our early twenties. Ever since we first strapped on boards (although now it’s all about skiing!) in the early 2000s, ski trips have been the calendar highlight of the year!
We are fortunate to have skied in resorts in multiple countries over the years, each offering beautiful slopes, delicious food and their own special charm. No matter how different they are, they all have a few things in common which I look forward to each season… and its not all about the slopes….
My top five things that I am looking forward to this season
Snow adventures with the family
Admittedly, the love for skiing is not held to the same degree with both my kids. The youngest will spend all day every day riding lifts and cutting up slopes. His older sister, however, is much more of a cruisy-blue kind of girl who is probably happier sitting out the afternoon in favour of a hot chocolate and a dig around in the snow. I have promised time away from the runs and on the ice rink or snow shoeing or just snuggled up by the fire for an afternoon or two. That way everyone comes home happy!
The quiet
Families can play a pivotal role in the circular economy by opting for second-hand ski wear. This section provides insights into the benefits of this approach, including cost savings, reduced environmental impact, and the joy of giving ski wear a second life. Ski Villages
I love being in the mountains and find it especially charming when I get to wander through the ski village where everyone seems happy, twinkling lights bring a sense of festive cheer and you get to explore how other people from different cultures live. The restaurants and cafes, the stores and markets, and activities on the go all elevate a ski holiday from being just an activity-based holiday to a real break from everyday life. And I love to see the dogs out and about frolicking in the snow too!
The food - but most importantly not having to cook it!
Now, this all depends on how you holiday but for us this year we are visiting an all-inclusive hotel and another offering dinner, bed and breakfast. The sheer joy I get from being able to leisurely amble around the food choices and pick something different each meal all in the knowledge that I don’t have to lift a hand to make it or clean up after it never tires. Oh, and there is always the option of dessert! What’s not to love.
Coming back to a tidy room that I haven’t had to wrangle the kids to help clean.
Once again, this all depends on whether you are having a self-catered, no service holiday or indulging in a treat of a serviced chalet or hotel. With everyone hard at work all year, this is a time where hubby and I can relax, keep things orderly but not have to whine at the small people to tidy up all the time. This break from real life is a huge win on our skiing trip.
Something for everyone
Of course, I absolutely love the skiing, it’s the main reason we go, but as my family grows up, I have learnt that there are so many more ways to enjoy a ski holiday. I loved the days of first lifts up and last lifts down but now appreciate the variety that comes with catering to what everyone wants to do – sledging, tobogganing, ice skating, wandering the village… it all has a special place in our holidays now.
