THE DIAMOND OF THE ALPS

Nestled high in Austria’s Tyrolean Alps, Obergurgl is often referred to as the “Diamond of the Alps.” Renowned for its pristine slopes, stunning scenery, and family-friendly atmosphere, this resort is a dream destination for families looking to create unforgettable winter memories. Here’s why Obergurgl should be at the top of your list for your next family ski holiday.

Vaya Crystal Unique: The Ideal Family Hotel

When it comes to accommodation, the Vaya Crystal Unique hotel stands out as a brilliant choice for families. This ski-in, ski-out hotel makes life effortless, allowing you to step right onto the slopes from its convenient location. It was a real highlight to our family ski trip in December 2024.

Key features include:

  • Magnificent Spa: The spa at the hotel is second to none. With an outdoor pool, indoor family-friendly pool, indoor adults only pool there is a lot to keep all water lovers happy. There are family-friendly saunas and steam rooms too along with a relaxation area (complete with headphone for chilled vibes) and plenty of pool loungers. The adults only spa area offers an abundance of elf saunas and steam rooms and the opportunity to enjoy aufguss sauna rituals (highly recommended!). A n impeccably designed relaxation area gives you the space to unwind without noise in a various of comfortable loungers and hammocks. Let’s not forget the spa treatments which are expertly administered. The spa is the perfect retreat for windy days when the lifts can’t open or as a treat after a long day on the slopes.

  • Indulgent Food: The dinners served at the Vaya Crystal Unique are some of the best I have been deserved in the mountains (or most places really). While the menu offers only a choice of between 3-5 main meals each night (changed daily) every one of them is delicious! From duck to veal, there wasn’t an evening where my dinner disappointed. And the desserts are not only mouthwatering, but some are eye-boggling too (See the mushroom below!)
Dessert which look like a wild mushroom
  • Ski Locker Room and Ski Rental Shop: The ski locker room is situated on the lower hotel floor and is connected to a ski rental shop making renting gear and getting ready super easy. To access the slopes, simply walk through the shop and up the stairs or elevator and voile! You are ready to get skiing.
  • Proximity to the Gondola: There is gondola just steps away from the hotel (right next to the rental shop), making it easy to hit the slopes first thing in the morning.

The hotel’s family-friendly amenities and beautiful design make it a home away from home.

Family Ski Parks for All Ages

Obergurgl/Hochgurgl is well-equipped for young skiers, with a variety of ski parks designed to make learning fun and engaging. The FunMountain Gurgl and other dedicated family zones provide safe spaces for children and adults to build confidence on the jumps, tunnels, twists and turns. These obstacles even include a buried car which you ski and jump over at the bottom of the mini park!

The resort offers plenty of beginner and intermediate trails where they can hone their skills as well as super fun black runs that won’t send you or the family running for the hills!

Beyond Skiing: Family Fun in the Village

Obergurgl isn’t just about skiing. The village offers a range of activities that families can enjoy together, such as:

  • Ice Skating: Glide across the outdoor ice rink and take in the picturesque mountain views.

  • Horse-Drawn Sleigh Rides: Explore the winter wonderland in style with a magical sleigh ride.

  • Indoor Pools and Spas: Relax and unwind after a day on the slopes with family-friendly wellness facilities.

For an unforgettable adventure, head to nearby Hochgurgl for an exhilarating tobogganing experience. The 3-kilometer illuminated toboggan run is sure to delight children and adults alike. Beware – there is every possibility that your children will be much better at this than you!

The best time to visit

Obergurgl’s high-altitude location guarantees excellent snow conditions throughout the ski season, which typically runs from mid-November to late April. For families, December and February half-term weeks are particularly popular, offering plenty of snow and festive vibes. It must be noted though that winds can pick up and when this happens the lifts don’t run. Fear not, there is plenty to keep you occupied until they do.

Special events such as Christmas Markets and New Year’s Eve celebrations add an extra touch of magic to the holiday season. Keep an eye out for family-oriented activities like torchlight processions and snow festivals during these times.

Why Families Love Obergurgl

Obergurgl’s charm lies in its ability to cater to every member of the family. From seamless logistics with the Vaya Crystal Unique hotel to engaging ski parks and a host of off-slope activities, this Alpine gem has everything you need for a perfect family ski holiday. Whether you’re creating your first snow memories or returning for another adventure, Obergurgl promises an unforgettable experience for all.
